Albert Edward Hooper

1892 - 1952

Albert is another of Dad's uncles. At the time of the 1901 census Albert  (10) was at home in Bethnal Green with his mother and brother George (13). When his mother Ellen died late in 1909 Albert had already left home. The next time he appears is in the 1911 census serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery in Gibraltar. His age is given as 21 - he is in fact only 19. Unfortunately about two thirds of soldiers army records were destroyed by fire in 1940, Albert's among them, so we can't know the exact details of his army service. But it seems most likely that when he joined up he added two years to his real age, probably in 1908/9.

(Considering that only a third of soldiers records remain, we're lucky to have the records for all three of his brothers)

When the war started in 1914 Albert transferred to the Royal Engineers, and joined the fighting in France. He was back in England in 1915 when he married Annie Laurence in Woolwich. After the war ended Albert joined the Metropolitan Police in Greenwich. He stayed with them until he retired in 1944.

Albert and Annie had one child, a son called Raymond, born in 1920.

Albert died in Woolwich in 1952.
